Port of Antwerp Sees Growth in All Segments for 2018

Belgium’s Port of Antwerp ended 2018 with growth in all segments, setting the sixth consecutive yearly record as it reported a growth of 5.2 percent compared to 2017.

The figures for 2018 show that the port’s total transshipment amounted to 235.2 million tonnes, a new record, with growth in all cargotypes.

Container traffic continued to grow and was up by 6.4 percent to 130.9 million tonnes, or 11.1 million TEU, marking a 6.2 rise. The port noted that only supplies from the Middle East and Latin America showed a slight decrease over the last year.

Breakbulk transhipment saw a more moderate increase with a growth of one percent. The RoRo cargo grew by 5.4 percent to 5.3 million tonnes, while the number of shipped passenger cars increased by 4.7 percent to just under 1.3 million.

Liquid bulk transshipment rose by 3.6 percent to 75.8 million tonnes, while dry bulk grew by 7.2 percent to 13 million tonnes.

Lastly, the number of seagoing vessels calling at Antwerp rose by 2.6 percent to 14,595.
