Port of Oakland Posts Improved 1H Results

US Port of Oakland recorded an increase in its total cargo volumes by six percent in the period between January and June this year, compared to the same period last year.

The port’s terminals handled 1,152,608 TEUs in the first half of this year, compared to 1,087,417 TEUs in 2015.

When looking at fully loaded containers, the port’s imports and exports have grown 10.1 percent compared to the first half of 2015.

“These container statistics are encouraging in light of the current state of volatility within the global maritime industry,” Maritime Director John Driscoll said.

When comparing loaded and total container volumes for the month of June 2016 versus June 2015, the data shows a 2.2 and 4.6 percent decline respectively. The decline in total TEUs was driven primarily by approximately 15 percent fewer export empty containers handled, according to the port authority.

Furthermore, the decline in loaded TEUs in June 2016 versus June 2015 was driven by a modest decline in export volumes.

Another major US West Coast port, the Port of Los Angeles, handled more cargo overall during the first six month of 2016 – 5.9 percent more when compared to 2015.

However, year-to-year total volume at the Port of Long Beach was down 0.6 percent, compared to the first six months of 2015.
