Premier Clark, Fort Nelson First Nation Talk B.C. LNG Strategy

Premier Christy Clark and Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation Minister John Rustad accepted the invitation of Chief Sharleen Gale and the Fort Nelson First Nation Council to meet and discuss B.C.’s LNG strategy and implementation.

The 90-minute meeting dealt with issues of concern to the Fort Nelson First Nation, including land stewardship, protection of culture and traditions, and economic development.

Both parties agreed this is a course correction that sets out a new path for their relationship based on a mutual objective to have the most environmentally responsible LNG industry in the world and for First Nations to be partners and key players in B.C.’s LNG strategy every step of the way.

Premier Clark has asked senior officials to work with the Fort Nelson First Nation directly to make decisions that will ensure timely progress toward achieving a safe, sustainable LNG industry that benefits all British Columbians.

Premier Christy Clark said: “Chief Gale and the Council reached out to me with their concerns, and we came here to listen closely. We share the same goals – a prosperous, sustainable economy that benefits all British Columbians, and creates opportunity for generations to come. Today’s meeting was a big step forward for everyone.”

Chief Sharleen Gale said : “We appreciate the Premier’s visit to our community today. We support the Province’s goal of a new LNG industry, but it must be done right – environmentally, culturally and economically. Her visit to Fort Nelson today is an important step in the right direction. Now, the responsibility of both parties is to roll up our sleeves and take action to ensure the highest environmental standards and show the world what we can do.”
