Qatar: RasGas Develops Student Safety Ambassadors

Safety and health is a core element of RasGas’ business philosophy. RasGas considers the development of safety and health awareness amongst young people as a necessary life skill. Working with the British Safety Council and senior students from Al Khor International School (AKIS), RasGas has developed a Safety Ambassador programme.

The Safety Ambassador programme which forms part of RasGas’ Corporate Social Responsibility initiative – the Year of the Community – involves the training of volunteers over a three month period across a wide spectrum of safety related topics. The course includes lectures, practical demonstrations and participation and site visits to Ras Laffan. In addition, RasGas employees from the Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHE&Q) Group are fully involved in this programme by sharing their expertise and skills. Once the Safety Ambassadors are recognised by the British Safety Council as competent the students can then continue acting as RasGas Safety Ambassadors to their fellow students with the continued support of RasGas Safety Department.

In January 2011, more than 40 students and teachers from AKIS enlisted on the volunteer programme. On March 8th, the volunteers were invited to visit the RasGas Safety Training Centre in Ras Laffan to observe how Qatar’s major liquefied natural gas company addresses safety challenges in the day-to-day working routine. Dr. Ali Al Hargan, RasGas Safety Manager commented on the students visit: “We are proud to share our expertise with young students as a demonstration that safety concerns have to be embedded in everyone’s education from an early age. When skilled on safety procedures, students will have a basic know-how to detect and prevent potential incident’s and will also learn how to respond quickly if presented with a dangerous situation.”

British Safety Council chief executive Mrs. Julie Nerney said: “The British Safety Council is proud to partner with RasGas to introduce a safety ambassador scheme for young students at Qatar’s AKIS School.” RasGas implements a strong Corporate Social Responsibility programme aimed at reaching out to the community and works to establish successful partnerships in the four spheres of community, education, environment and health. RasGas is an active partner in Qatar’s drive for sustainable development and through different and imaginative approaches is ensuring the education of the next generation with the knowledge that it will have a ripple effect throughout the community.
