Qatargas, Maersk to jointly explore LNG propulsion technology

Qatargas on Tuesday said it has signed a technical collaboration agreement with the Maersk Group to explore opportunities related to the use of LNG marine propulsion.

The technical agreement comes only a day after the memorandum of understanding was signed by Qatargas, Maersk Group and Shell to explore the development of LNG as a marine fuel in the Middle East region.

Qatargas CEO, Khalid bin Khalifa Al Thani, said the partnership with Maersk will explore new or improved technology for Qatar’s LNG carriers and contribute to the development of alternative fuel technology for vessel operators.

Nils S. Andersen, CEO of Maersk Group added that the use of LNG propulsion could lead to a reduction in SOx emissions as well as reducing CO2 footprint by 25 percent.
