RasGas Engineers Visit LNG Facilities in Japan

A team of young Qatari engineers from RasGas have visited Japan to get hands-on experience and an insight into the production of LNG during a two month training programme.

The specialised technical training session hosted by Chiyoda Corporation Japan, was part of RasGas’ continuing push to provide value-added training opportunities that would enhance the engineering skills of young nationals who want to advance their career in the LNG industry.

As part of the specialised training course, the RasGas trainees were taken on several site visits. The first visit was to Yokogawa Electric Corporation, which is one of the biggest companies in Japan for instruments and control suppliers.

The second visit was to Hokkaido Island to see the newly constructed LNG receiving terminal. They also met with the Hokkaido Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. They were also taken to the Ishikariwan LNG Terminal of Kitagas, one of Qatargas’ customers, and the Extra Fabrication Workshop at NAS TOA Kawasaki Plant, Yanai LNG receiving terminal and Chugoku Electric Power Company.

Ahmad al-Mohannadi, operations technical engineering department manager at RasGas, who attended the concluding ceremony, said the trainees have definitely enhanced their engineering ability in the gas sector and improved their knowledge in several other disciplines through this specialised course.

He said the trainees “showed a high degree of commitment and were very motivated. They were provided hands on experience in many areas that covered project management, controls, construction and cost estimation, process engineering, mechanical engineering, instrument and control engineering, corrosion and HSE engineering, all of which are key parts of the LNG operations and production processes.”

He said the training was aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030, which recognised education as a key component of Qatar’s path to sustainability and in particular its human development pillar as the “development of all people to enable them to sustain a prosperous society,” said al-Mohannadi.

The RasGas trainees included Sayer al-Anzi (Instruments and Control Engineer), Hamad Mohamed al-Marri (Cost Engineer), Aysha al-Mohannadi (Project Engineer), Rashid Mohamed al-Mansouri (Process and Surveillance Engineer) and Adel al-Sayed (Integrity and Corrosion Engineer).

Rashid Mohamed al-Mansouri said the site visits conducted during the course were a great experience for all trainees. “This specialised training course gave us an insight into the broad spectrum of LNG production and operations. Visiting and learning from some of the best Japanese companies in the world was extremely useful for us and a great opportunity. We will certainly be able to apply the skills that we have picked up when we return to Qatar,” he said.

Aysha al-Mohannadi said the course meant a lot to them and would contribute to develop their knowledge and experience. “It was one of the very rare channels for networking with higher authorities in Japan and to understand how they achieved such high levels in designing the LNG trains from a technical point of view,” she said.
