RenewableUK Marine Survival Training (MST)

Warsash Maritime Academy (WMA) a part of Southampton Solent University’s Faculty of Maritime fit Technology provides first class training, consultancy and research to the international shipping and offshore industries.

Over the years, WMA has been successfully providing OPITO approved Basic Offshore Safety Induction fit Emergency Training (BOSIET), Further Offshore Emergency Training (FOET) and Helicopter Underwater Training (HUET) in addition to a full range of MCA approved Maritime Safety courses. The Academy also delivers bespoke training packages for both the Offshore as well as Maritime clients.

The UK wind farm industry is a rapidly expanding sector with specific maritime safety considerations. Recognising this, the RenewableUK recommends Marine Safety Training (MST) for all personnel transiting and transferring to and from offshore wind farm structures by vessels. MST will address the most significant health, safety and emergency response training issues as they relate to vessel transit and transfer. The course entails the following topics and requires a refresher training at least every 2 years:

  1. Wind farm industry overview.
  2. Offshore environment fit hazards.
  3. Organisation for safety when transiting and transferring to and from offshore wind farms including practical boat transfers.
  4. Law fit enforcement.
  5. Offshore operations fit emergencies.
  6. Marine survival, including practical wet drills.
  7. Basic First Aid.

It is anticipated that this course will become a requirement for the UK wind farm work force in the near future. This will apply to both the technicians, surveyors and other staff travelling on vessels to/from the offshore wind farms.

By utilising its expertise (and to make this training available to wind farm personnel located in South of England) WMA intends to seek RenewableUK approval to operate its Marine Survival Training and Refresher Marine Survival Training.
