Keel Laid for Diesel Icebreaker of Project 21900М

The official keel laying ceremony for the icebreaker of the project 21900M took place at ОАО Vyborg Shipyard on October 17th 2012. Construction of the ship is carried out within the Federal Target Program “Development of Transport System in Russia (2010 – 2015)”.

Under the agreement signed in late August, RS will perform survey during construction of the icebreaker. The RS experts will carry out surveys including hull, machinery, electrical and automation equipment.

The new icebreaker has been upgraded taking into account the operational experience of previous projects’ icebreakers assistance during the winter navigation in the Gulf of Finland. Project 21900М icebreaker is a double-decker with helideck, displacement of about 10.000t, two full-revolving rudder propellers and a bow thruster. Its ice breaking capability is up to 1.5 m. Icebreaker is designed for independent ice escorting of heavy-tonnage vessels, towage, fire fighting on floating facilities, salvage of distressed ships, transportation of cargoes. Completion of the icebreaker construction is planned for 2015.
