Russia’s Food Ban Showing Its Face

Russia’s ban on food imports from Western countries is starting to be felt among shippers, the first being Danish Maersk Line, according to which significant amounts of produce out would need to be returned to its original senders.

“Maersk Line customers were completely unprepared for these sanctions and since they had effect immediately, a significant amount of cargo at sea needs to be returned,” Reuters quoted Maersk Line as saying on Wednesday.

Responding to Western sanctions for its actions in Ukraine, Russia hit back with an embargo on food products originating from the said countries earlier this month.

Shipping companies are keeping a close eye on Russia’s next move, as the country looks for alternative routes for ocean freight.

Option number one seems to be Latin America, having in mind recent talks between Russia with the ambassadors of Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Ecuador to boost food import traffic.
