Scaled NEMOS-device on trials in Nantes

Research & Development

The tests of the 1:5 scaled NEMOS-device are being conducted at ECN, in one of the biggest wave tanks in the world, in Nantes.

As a result of the precise adjustments and reproducibility of wave conditions provided by the ECN, extensive hydromechanical parameter studies can be made.

More than 200 tests are to be conducted, and the results will be integrated in the system during the upcoming field tests of the full-scaled device, according to NEMOS. The testing is conducted within MARINET project.

The NEMOS-system consists of an elongated floating body which is connected to the seabed by three ropes. Excited by the movement of the waves, it transmits mechanical energy to a generator positioned protected from sea water at a monopile.

For protection from extreme wave loads in heavy storms, the system can be lowered to calmer water. The system is particularly suitable for the combination with offshore wind turbines.

The construction and operation of the system are shown in the video below.
