Spotted: Scandlines Sends Hybrid Duo on a Diet

Scandlines Sends Newbuilding Duo on a Diet

The German-Danish ferry operator Scandlines has sent two of its hybrid ferries – the Berlin and the Copenhagen, intended to serve the company’s Rostock to Gedser service – on ”an extreme slimming diet” to G+H Marine GmbH, as the 169-meter ferries would not be able to enter Denmark’s port of Gedser when fully loaded, and need to lose a total of 700 tons in weight each.

In order to implement this project, the ships will first be restored to their newly constructed state. From then on, G+H Marine will be designing and implementing the entire interior fittings of the ferries from scratch.

Everything from the insulation to the entire interior fittings was first put to the test to identify where weight could be saved. To achieve the target weight, G+H Marine is combining especially lightweight materials and innovative structures for the realisation of the project.

As a result, the tasks to be carried out by G+H Marine not only involve furnishing the lounges and a buffet restaurant, but also designing a shopping mall on the ships.

What’s more, functional areas such as the parking deck and the cabins are also being rebuilt.
