UPDATE: Genco Challenger Stays in Service after Stabbing Incident

The recent stabbing incident onboard tanker Genco Challenger that resulted in two seafarers dead and one injured will not affect the vessel’s operation as “Genco Challenger remains in service”, Genco Shipping & Trading Limited said in a statement.

In addition, Genco said that it did not expect this matter would result in any negative impact to its operations.

” Genco noted with regret an occurrence on the Genco Challenger, a vessel owned by the company’s subsidiary Genco Challenger Limited. An altercation occurred on-board the vessel which resulted in the death of a seafarer, one injured and one lost over-board. The vessel is managed and crewed by Wallem Shipmanagement, Hong Kong, and Wallem Shipmanagement has been in contact with the families of those involved and is working diligently with all relevant authorities.  

<The safety of its seafarers is a top priority for Genco and the company will cooperate in all aspects of the response to this matter, ” the statement read.

U.S. Coast Guard recovered the body of a man who is believed to had jumped overboard on Thursday, last week after a stabbing incident on the tanker Genco Challenger.

The incident occurred off the coast of Bethany Beach, Delaware aboard the Hong Kong-flagged bulk carrier, owned by Genco Shipping & Trading Limited.

Initial findings indicate that one of the ship’s crew stabbed two of his crew members before jumping overboard.

Once the Coast Guard was informed of the incident, it sent boats and helicopters to the site. The stabbing victims were medevaced to a nearby hospital while the body was located at about 5 p.m. Friday, less than one mile from the vessel.

Circumstances involving the accident remain to be determined.

The Coast Guard said that the violence is under investigation by Hong Kong and the U.S. State Department.
