Stena Drilling Working to Find the Cause of Stena Clyde Accident

Stena Drilling Limited has confirmed that an incident occurred on its Stena Clyde semi-submersible drilling rig yesterday, currently operating in offshore Australia, at approximately 00:20hrs (UK time).

Stena Drilling revealed that the incident, which resulted in two fatalities one British national and one Australian, occurred on the drill floor of the rig.

Drilling operations on the rig have been suspended and the well is safe. The rig, of Aker H3 design, is located in Otway Basin, offshore Victoria and is on contract to Origin Energy. The company’s statement says that the local emergency services have been mobilised to the incident and the onshore Stena emergency organisation has been mobilised and the relevant external authorities and next of kin have been notified.

“Stena can confirm that an Investigation Team has been assembled and are being mobilised to the Stena Clyde,” said the company in a statement signed by Tom Welo, Managing Director of Stena Drilling Ltd.

The Investigation Team consists of personnel from NOPSEMA (National Offshore Petroleum Safety Environmental Management Authority), Stena Drilling and Origin Energy Resources and it is hoped to establish the cause of the incident in due course.
