Two offshore workers were today killed in an accident aboard Stena Clyde semi-submersible drilling rig, located offshore Victoria, Australia.

The workers were fatally injured during drilling operations being carried out by Stena Drilling (Australia) Pty Ltd, on behalf of Origin Energy, on a well in the Otway Basin in the Bass Strait.

The National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) has said it has commenced an investigation into the accident. News reports say that all the operations on the rig have been suspended and that police has flown to the rig.

In an e-mail sent to Offshore Energy Today, Origin Energy confirmed that the incident occurred at approximately 09:15 am local time this morning.

Origin has also confirmed that that all on board operations have been suspended and the well has been secured in line with established safety and emergency response procedures.

“There are no environmental issues as a result of the incident and existing Otway production is not impacted,” the company concluded.
