Stone Harbor to Receive Capital Beach Fill Project (USA)

Stone Harbor to Receive Capital Beach Fill Project

The Borough of Avalon will receive a significant beach fill project during the winter that will result in at least 140,000 cubic yards of sand being placed on the north end beaches from 9th Street south to 20th Street.

If extra options are available to the borough for the project, a total of 190,000 cubic yards of sand will be placed on the beaches.

This will be one of the most significant and important beach fill projects the Borough has conducted in our history”, said Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi. “This base of the beach fill project will be totally financed by the federal government with State and Borough financing only being used if all three options are exercised by Avalon. This will provide us with a large protective and recreational beach heading into the spring and summer seasons of 2013.”

Stone Harbor is poised to receive one of the largest beach fill projects in the borough’s history, up to 260,000 cubic yards of sand to be placed along the beachfront.

We are thrilled that the United States Army Corps of Engineers will be conducting this emergency beach fill project in Stone Harbor”, said Stone Harbor Mayor Suzanne Walters who attended the pre-construction meeting at Borough Hall. “Stone Harbor’s beaches were eroded during the Hurricane Irene storm event in 2011, and this emergency beach fill will restore our beaches to conditions that existed before Irene paid us a visit.”
