Svitzer scores Ichthys LNG towage deal

The Copenhagen-based Svitzer said its Australian unit has recently been awarded a 10-year towage and marine services deal for the Inpex-operated Ichthys LNG project in the port of Darwin.

The towage company said in a statement that under the contract, Svitzer Australia will provide four Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) escort tugs to assist LNG, LPG and condensate carriers into and out of the Port of Darwin once the project’s onshore processing facility is up and running in late 2017.

The fleet will consist of two existing vessels plus two newbuilds, Svitzer said.

The contract includes an option to extend the towage and marine services deal up to a maximum of 19 years.

Svitzer will additionally build a new tug base at the East Arm Wharf.
