Thailand: Unithai Shipyard Christens 108MW Floating Power Barge

The christening and launching of a 108MW floating power barge, took place at the Unithai Shipyard at Laem Chabang deep sea port, on Thursday, June 30. This is the second order from Wartsila Finland Oy, awarded to Unithai Shipyard in the third quarter of last year.

The 105-metre-long, 32-metre-wide floating power barge is named the Estrella del Mar, meaning “Star of the Sea”. Construction is targeted for completion by the fourth quarter of this year. With six Wartsila diesel generators, the floating power plant is capable of generating 108 megawatts of electricity. The floating power barge will be transported from Thailand to Caribbean Sea and be fed into the power grid plant which is under construction by Wartsila Finland Oy.

Unithai Shipyard delivered the first 71MW floating power barge ever built in Thailand to Wartsila Finland Oy in the first quarter this year. The power barge’s full commissioning and performance tests were undertaken by the Wartsila team at the Unithai Shipyard before its transfer to Papua New Guinea, where it generates power to a gold mine on Lihir Island, owned by the Australian company.

The success of this project underscores the excellent collaboration between Unithai Shipyard and the professional team from Wartsila Finland Oy in providing the ideal solution for the contractor’s needs.
