The First ISO Certified Norwegian Shipyard

Havyard Ship Technology in Leirvik, Sogn is the only Norwegian shipyard to be ISO certified. The company has for many years worked towards developing a production, project and quality control system in order to strengthen the quality of end products.

And in March it was confirmed; Havyard Ship Technology AS has received certification according to the ISO 9001, being the only shipyard in Norway with this type of certification.

Yard Director Trygve Solaas at Havyard Ship Technology says: “This is a confirmation that our systems are certified according to the ISO standard, which is very important quality verification.”

He underlines that this quality approval will be noticed by potential customers, customers who demand a lot more today than before.

“The certification is a result of Havyard`s willingness and ability to adapt to an ever-demanding shipbuilding industry. With this certification in hand we have carried out good, solid work in order to position ourselves where we want to be; which is amongst the best,” says the Yard Director. The core of the ISO standard is customer focus, a process mentality and continuous improvement, something which is vital within the shipbuilding industry.”

Havyard Production System is based on the Lean Production methodology, a methodology that for example Toyota Production System is based upon.

“This method of working can be compared to Toyota`s manufacturing system, where there is a great focus on delivering products at the right time, with correct price and of expected quality,” Solaas explains.

INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY

Det Norske Veritas (DNV) spent four days at the Leirvik shipyard for their final review and certification of the quality assurance system at Havyard Ship Technology. Solaas informs that the feedback was excellent. He emphasizes that the methods Havyard has developed through this project will help the shipyard with increased productivity and work efficiency, something which will make Havyard even more competitive. Innovation Norway has also been involved in the ISO certification process.

“We believe this certification equips us in creating even better systems in terms of improving efficiency of all processes that needs to be performed, when delivering first class ships according to a customer’s needs and expectations. We believe this will provide predictability and added security for our customers and suppliers.”

STRATEGIC PLAN

Solaas thinks the future will provide added focus on shipyards and companies being certified. In the time ahead Havyard Group will look at other business areas that can also potentially be certified.

“Havyard Ship Technology is the locomotive of Havyard Group, and therefore we have put maximum effort into the shipyard reaching certification. We believe all business areas of Havyard will benefit from this certification. In our strategic plan we have decided that all of our group shall become certified according to the ISO 9001 quality control system and the ISO 14001 environmental management system,” says Solaas.
