The Netherlands: Van Oord Bags Amazonehaven Contract

Van Oord Bags Amazonehaven Contract

Van Oord and Besix have been awarded a contract to widen Rotterdam’s Amazonehaven seaport. The project involves design and construct. Widening the seaport will make vessel traffic control safer and more efficient.

The works will involve constructing a 1000 m quay wall, demolishing a 950 m quay wall, carrying out earthworks, installing a sinking mattress, and covering it with a top layer of rock. Van Oord will excavate 1,000,000 m3 of material, most of which will be re-used in the project. The remaining material will be marketed. Van Oord will be deploying a suction dredger, crane ships, and dry earth-moving equipment.

The preparations have already started and the project should be completed by March 2014. The client is the Port of Rotterdam Authority and the contract value for the joint venture is around EUR 40 million.
