Two Awards for German Shipping Company Hamburg Sud

At Cargo News Asia’s 26th Annual Asian Freight & Supply Chain Awards in Shanghai on 5 June 2012, Hamburg Süd received the Best Green Service Provider Shipping Award for the first time.

The readers of the Hong Kong-based shipping and logistics trade paper chose Hamburg Süd from three nominated shipping companies after Cargo News Asia had previously put forward eight carriers from among the world’s top 20 container shipping lines.

The criteria for the award were, among other things, compliance with national and global environmental regulations and environmental standards, adequate investment in new environmental technologies, measures aimed at the reduction of fuel consumption, and employee training to minimise the carbon footprint. The award was accepted by Eva Graumann, Global Head of Corporate Communications for Hamburg Süd.

Just a few hours later, also on 5 June 2012, the Port of Long Beach bestowed the Green Flag Environmental Award on Hamburg Süd for the third time. The port confers the distinction on shipping companies which voluntarily reduce speed to below 12 knots when entering or leaving the port and so make an important contribution towards cutting emissions and lowering air pollution. Hamburg Süd has now received this award for 2008, 2010 and 2011.

“With the Best Green Service Provider Shipping Line Award we have now, for the first time, also been honoured in Asia for our sustainable and environmentally conscious behaviour,” says Dr Ottmar Gast, Chairman of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd. “The two awards together are both confirmation of the path we have embarked upon and an incentive to further expand Hamburg Süd’s environmental activities.”
