Dan Hampson and Brian Russell of CGG have been awarded Honorary Membership of the Geophysical Society of Houston (GSH) during its 2014 Annual Honors and Awards Banquet.

Honorary Membership of the GSH is conferred in recognition of a distinguished contribution to the geophysical profession. It is the highest award bestowed by the GSH and Brian and Dan were the only recipients this year.

Brian and Dan founded Hampson-Russell Software in 1987. When the company was acquired by Veritas DGC in 2002 and then by CGG in 2007, the founders continued their mission to deliver best-in-class seismic reservoir characterization software and services to the worldwide oil and gas industry.

Today, Dan serves as president, Hampson-Russell, which is now part of CGG GeoSoftware, with Brian as vice president for global Hampson-Russell sales, and both continue to guide the strategy and development of geoscience software within the CGG GeoSoftware organisation.

Throughout their extensive careers in technology innovation, Brian and Dan have generously contributed their time and expertise to important industry organizations. Brian Russell is an internationally recognized expert in seismic inversion, amplitude variation with offset (AVO) and seismic attribute analysis.

Through CGG and Hampson-Russell, he provides training courses on these subjects throughout the world, and also continues to be active in the development of new software. He is a past president of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) and the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists (CSEG), a past chairman of The Leading Edge Editorial Board and has received Honorary Membership from both the SEG and CSEG, as well as the SEG Cecil Green Enterprise Award jointly with Dan Hampson for their company’s contribution to the industry.

Dan Hampson is the originator of several innovations in the field of seismic processing, including the Generalized Linear Inverse approach to refraction statics analysis and the Parabolic Radon Transform noise and multiple attenuation algorithm. He too is a past president of the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists (CSEG) and, in addition, has received the SEG’s Reginald Fessenden Award for his work on the Parabolic Radon Transform.

Sophie Zurquiyah, Senior Executive Vice President, Geology, Geophysics & Reservoir, CGG, said: “CGG is extremely privileged to have Dan Hampson and Brian Russell as key members of our GeoSoftware management team. They are shining examples to us all of true dedication to the advancement of our industry. They fully deserve the recognition they are regularly shown by our industry societies for their total commitment to innovation and their enthusiasm for sharing their knowledge and expertise for the benefit of the wider geophysical community.”
