Viridien embarks on first hybrid streamer-OBN 3D seismic survey in Asia-Pacific

France-based geophysical services company Viridien, formerly known as CGG, has kicked off the first-ever combined streamer and sparse ocean bottom node (OBN) multi-client 3D seismic survey in the Asia-Pacific region to shed light on the exploration potential of frontier basins.

Viridien has started seismic imaging of the Langkasuka multi-client 3D (MC3D) hybrid survey offshore West Peninsular Malaysia, described as the flagship combined streamer and sparse OBN multi-client 3D seismic dataset acquired in the Asia-Pacific region. This project is supported by a high level of industry funding, and early results will be available in October 2026.

Building on the success of our Langkasuka basin study last year, the Langkasuka MC3D demonstrates Viridien’s commitment to leveraging its high-end imaging expertise to make proprietary-grade, drill-ready data available through a multi-client framework to help explorers unlock the potential of promising frontier basins.”

The French firm emphasizes that the project launch marked the first deployment of dual Sercel TPSTM broadband seismic sources on a hybrid-receiver survey in the region. The Langkasuka MC3D dataset will integrate 12,300 square kilometers of streamer data and 3,300 square kilometers of OBN data acquired in the Malacca Strait.

The company will apply its advanced imaging technologies, including time-lag full-waveform inversion (TLFWI), to the low-frequency TPS data to image the complex pre-tertiary sequences in the region, where the presence of a previously unexplored Paleozoic sedimentary section has been demonstrated.

The start-up of this survey comes a couple of months after Viridien partnered with Norway’s Aker BP to strengthen hydrocarbon exploration by advancing multi-client OBN seismic data acquisition, imaging, and technology development on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS).
