Seatrade's Ship Repair-Shipyard Award for 2011 Goes to Drydocks World

Drydocks World received the Ship Repair/Shipyard Award at the recently concluded Seatrade Middle East & Indian Subcontinent Awards 2011 ceremony. The ceremony was held at the Atlantis The Palm Dubai attended by more than 750 key functionaries from the industry. Dr. Markus Voege, VP – Operation & Production received the Award from Shosuke Kakubari, Executive President, ClassNK.

The Dubai based shipyard is the largest facility in the Middle East. In 2010, despite adverse market conditions, a total of 283 vessels were repaired by the Dubai based shipyard. The shipyard had invested in a new highly advanced 320 sq.m. cryogenic facility recently to address the specialized and sophisticated repair needs of gas carriers. The year saw an increase in the number of gas carriers repaired, which included 10 LPG vessels and 23 LNG vessels belonging to oil and gas majors in the world.

Several of the LNGs vessels repaired were of the large Q-Max and Q-Flex type. The year also major repair and modification carried out on 8 offshore drilling rigs. In addition, the shipyard completed 2 sophisticated conversion projects, 5 advanced new building projects and the shipyard’s Afloat Repair Division handled 194 projects.

The shipyard has the largest and modern workshops in the Middle East region. In 2010, the steel workshop carried out an overall fabrication of 10,350 tonnes of steel. The pipe shop fabricated 15,854 spools totaling 236,000 diameter inches and a total of 300 km of electrical cabling was carried out during the same year. In order to address the wide ranging needs of the complex and sophisticated vessel conversion projects, the shipyard had invested in enhancing and extending its pipe shop and electrical workshops. With a view to become the foremost and leading pipe fabrication facility in UAE for servicing marine and other industry sectors, the shipyard has plans to build its expertise in fabrication of cladded pipes, titanium and heat exchanger tube bundles in the near future.

In 2010, the shipyard also continued on its excellent safety record and received its 7th consecutive British Safety Council Sword of Honour. It continues to have an excellent track record in maintaining and managing quality and environmental standards.
