Croatian shipbuilder Uljanik launched Algoma Innovator, a 24,900 dwt bulk carrier built for Canadian shipping company Algoma Central Corporation, at 3. Maj shipyard in Rijeka on December 29, 2016.

With a gross tonnage of 16,000 tons, Algoma Innovator features a length of 198.1 meters and a width of 22 meters.

The Handysize bulker is the first of five self-unloading ships for the transportation of bulk cargo being built for Algoma by Uljanik.

Algoma Innovator and another 24,900 dwt bulker were ordered in March and September 2015, respectively. The vessels are scheduled for delivery in July and October 2017, according to data provided by VesselsValue.

The remaining three ships, all having a deadweight of 39,000 tons, were ordered in September 2015. The contracts for the ships were signed after Algoma had canceled the order placed at China’s Nantong Mingde Heavy Industries. The three bulk carriers are slated for delivery in March, June and September 2018, VesselsValue’s data shows.

All five vessels are intended for sailing on the Great Lakes, on the Canada-United States border, Uljanik said.
