USA - Maersk Line Ltd Receives Energy Efficiency Certification from ABS

Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) has become the first shipping company to receive global certification from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for energy management per the Guide for Marine Health, Safety, Quality, Environmental and Energy (HSQEEn) Management.

Successful implementation of the standards required a commitment from all levels and functions of the organization, and it underscores MLL’s ongoing effort to improve the environmental sustainability of its operations.

ABS requirements for energy management are based on the international standard, ISO 50001:2011, Energy Management Systems. ISO 50001 specifies how an organization should establish targets and develop and implement an energy policy which takes into account legal requirements and other factors related to energy use. This international standard sets forth the systems and processes necessary to improve energy performance and efficiency. Implementing an energy management system supports reductions in energy costs, greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts.

Members of the ABS audit team were present at MLL’s Norfolk, Virginia headquarters to verify conformance and present the certificate to the hard working team members who were involved in achieving the milestone. MLL joins a select group of companies who have demonstrated their commitment to sustainable operations and improving energy performance in accordance with ISO 50001.
