USA: Officials Extend Deadline for Newport Harbor Dredging

After missing a deadline, Newport Beach officials were granted a deadline extension and have until June to commence the next phase of the city’s harbor dredging project, Daily Pilot reports.

Dredged materials from areas near the south side of Lido Isle, the north side of Balboa Island, West Coast Highway, the Coast Guard Station and other areas were supposed to be transported to the Port of Long Beach by March 14.

Chris Miller, the Harbor Resources Manager, stated that the deadline was missed due to complications involving the Army Corps of Engineers not being able to award the $6.5-million project to a contractor in time for the deadline.

I think we can get through these growing pains together through 2012,” Miller said. “It’s just one of those things everyone is going to have to be patient with, and I apologize for that.
