PPG Introduces SIGMA SYLADVANCE 700 Antifouling

PPG Protective and Marine Coatings (PPG) has launched SIGMA SYLADVANCE 700, a high performance antifouling designed specifically for ships working at medium to high rates of operation and medium speeds.

Based on the already hugely successful SIGMA SYLADVANCE 800 premium antifouling product, SIGMA SYLADVANCE 700 extends the product offer by means of an ‘entry-level’ SIGMA SYLADVANCE making premium technology available for a different set of requirements.

Sijmen Visser, Global Marketing Manager Marine said:

Antifouling coatings have evolved over the past decade, in some part due to technological advances, but also because of the very real need for vessel operators to reduce fuel costs whilst continuing to optimise voyage efficiency.

Silyl-acrylate technology is at the forefront of the drive to reduce fuel spend, which in many cases can take up 50% of an entire ships’ daily operating costs. PPG has been working hard to develop hardwearing, environmentally-sound products that can offer fuel savings.”

SIGMA SYLADVANCE 700 is based on patented silyl acrylate polymer technology and offers self-smoothing properties and outstanding fouling protection. The untainted nature of the binder delivers consistent antifouling performance and an uncompromised, predictable linear polishing pattern which in turn can significantly reduce frictional drag.

 Sijmen Visser added:

PPG’s SIGMA SYLADVANCE 700 product can be specified for dry dock maintenance and repair projects. Its predictable polishing rate allows us to provide a tailor-made solution for each vessel’s profile and sailing pattern. As a result, owners and operators can confidently expect to achieve a controlled performance for up to 60 months.

SIGMA SYLADVANCE 700 is a pure silyl acrylate premium antifouling product from the same family as SIGMA SYLADVANCE 800, a silyl acrylate antifouling product with a proven track record across the last 10 years.

SIGMA SYLADVANCE 800 has been used on a wide range of vessel types for both newbuilding and maintenance/repair projects by a number of operators worldwide, including Piraeus-based shipmanager Chandris (Hellas) Inc.

When Chandris sought to upgrade the hull coating on the 2007-built VLCC Ellinis, it needed a solution that would be suitable for worldwide trading on a demanding operational schedule. Maintenance of the most optimal hull condition and improvement to the vessel’s efficiency were the key requirements.

In addition to keeping the ship’s hull free from fouling, SIGMA SYLADVANCE 800’s silyl-acrylate polymer technology contributed positively to the hydrodynamics of the ship’s hull by reducing hull frictional drag and the total amount of fuel consumed.
