VIDEO: Sabella lays cable for D10 tidal

Operations & Maintenance

Sabella, a French tidal energy developer, has completed the cable laying procedure for its 1 MW D10 tidal turbine on Tuesday, May 26, 2015.

The cable was installed using Bourbon’s Argonaut tugboat that is 69 m long and 14 m wide.

The installation of the 2 km, 7.5 kVA cable started on Monday, May 25.

In order to stabilize and protect 200 m of cable, Sabella used cast iron protection that was provided by FMGC.

The team of 20 people on board used 300 buoys to float the cable so it can be towed easily.

After the installation, the crew performed electrical and optical tests to validate the cable condition.

An ROV equipped with cameras was deployed to perform visual check of the cable laid at the depth of 55 m.

Sabella plans to deploy its 1 MW D10 tidal turbine late in June, subject to suitable weather conditions, during the neap tide, and connect it to the Ushant island’s grid.
