At the end of 2016, Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has been awarded a contract to develop an LNG storage facility in Raahe, Northern Finland.

The facility will be used by the local utility Raahen Voima that plans to replace the use of LPG for power generation with liquefied natural gas (LNG) at the local SSAB steel mill.

In a video released by Wärtsilä, the company shows the delivery of the two large LNG-tanks, 35 meters long and 6 meters in diameter, to the facility, a milestone that was achieved at the end of November last year.

The LNG will be transported to Raahe by tanker trucks from Manga LNG Oy’s terminal in Tornio, northern Finland, with deliveries to start in early 2018.

Manga LNG, which owns the LNG terminal in Tornio, is a joint venture by Outokumpu, SSAB, Skangas and EPV Energia. SSAB has a 25 percent share in the terminal project.

The Raahe LNG terminal will be fully operational in summer 2018, Wärtsilä said.
