Wärtsilä and COSCO Sign BWMS License Deal

Finnish engineering company Wärtsilä has signed a manufacturing license agreement to provide China’s COSCO (Weihai) Shipbuilding Marine Technology Company Limited (WECOSCO) with access to technology and the rights to manufacture the Wärtsilä Aquarius Electro Chlorination (EC) Ballast Water Management System (BWMS).

In return, Wärtsilä gains access to an additional manufacturing facility able to assist with supply and demand of the Wärtsilä BWMS direct to Wärtsilä customers. The agreement was signed in Weihai on May 28, 2015 and takes effect from June 1, 2015.

Wärtsilä retains ownership of the Aquarius EC technology and all associated Intellectual Property Rights, and will provide technical support to WECOSCO who will manufacture the system under license for applications on ships across the global marine market including COSCO.

The Aquarius EC BWMS will be supplied with Type Approvals obtained by Wärtsilä and according to both IMO and USCG legislation will be installed not only new ships but also for the significant retrofit market.

”This is a landmark agreement forming an important new partnership, which facilitates the supply of Wärtsilä Aquarius EC BWMS to a significant part of the Chinese marine market, both for new build ships and retrofit projects,”  said Dr Joe Thomas, Director, Ballast Water Management Systems, Wärtsilä Ship Power.

”By combining the strengths of our two companies, we can more effectively meet the growing demand for EC based BWMS in the short term and for medium to large vessel applications. Our combined global service networks also ensures that the BWMS are fully supported wherever and whenever needed.”

The agreement has a 5-year initial term. The two companies will support each other in delivering the BWMS technology to a broader customer base, and in providing long term global service support and sales of spare parts for our combined customer base

”As one of the Fortune 500 companies, COSCO is engaged in shipping, logistics, shipbuilding and ship repairing. Wärtsilä is a world famous supplier for marine equipment. By combining the strengths and giving full play to the advantages of both companies, we have achieved a win-win cooperation. The agreement, which has a representative meaning for both of us, is a good foundation for our further cooperation,” said Jia Lianjun, Chairman of WECOSCO Board of Directors.
