Wartsila scores Hamina LNG terminal gig in Finland

The port of Hamina

Finland’s Wärtsilä has been awarded a turn-key contract with Hamina LNG to supply a liquefied natural gas receiving terminal to be built in the port of Hamina.

The contract scope includes site and civil works and a storage tank with a combined net volume of 30,000 cbm. The work also includes regasification, unloading and loading system as well as bunkering and truck loading facilities.

The LNG terminal is scheduled to be operational in August 2020.

The port of Hamina will be the first LNG receiving terminal in Finland connected to Finnish gas grid. When the terminal is operational, LNG can also be delivered to major harbors in Finland by using trucks.

Estonian energy company, Alexela, and Haminan Energy announced earlier this year that they will build an LNG terminal in Hamina Kotka harbor through their joint venture, Hamina LNG.

The project, valued at 95 million euros ($111.8m), has received a 30 percent investment support from the Finnish government in 2014.

“We wanted to create a terminal infrastructure which would provide bunkering for vessels as well as diversify the country’s sources of gas supply,” said Peter van Buuren, Chief Executive of Hamina LNG.

“The Hamina project is part of Finland’s plans to create a network of medium scale LNG terminals with the aim of offering gas supply to the local industry and LNG for ship bunkering, and ensuring an additional source of gas for Finland,” said Timo Mahlanen, Senior Business Development Manager, Wärtsilä Energy Solutions.

“The project will bring a significant reduction in CO2 emissions by providing cleaner fuel for transport and industry. At the same time, the LNG infrastructure will increase the security of supply in Finland with gas grid connection,” added Mahlanen.
