Westports Achieves Major Milestones

YB Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed, Minister of International Trade and Industries (MITI), recently visited Westports and was briefed on the progress of the latest container terminal expansion program.

The Container Terminal 8 (CT8) expansion is being undertaken in two phases and the construction work of Phase 1, which started in January 2015, has now been completed.

The first 300-meter wharf has been commissioned into service in the middle of 2016 with the deployment of an additional four units of new 52-meter high ship-to-shore cranes.

At the container yard, six units of energy-efficient Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes have also been received and commissioned into service.

Construction of the second container terminal gate has also been completed. Equipped with 14 lanes, it will facilitate more efficient and expedient movement of haulier trucks exiting the container yard.

Once the second gate is fully commissioned, supported by the necessary back-end infrastructure system, the current and first container terminal gate would be used for haulier trucks entering into Westports.

Meanwhile, the construction work at Phase 2 of CT8 has commenced with the piling for the second 300-meter wharf. Between the present time and the end of 2017, Westports will receive more new ship-to-shore cranes and also Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes.

The completion of CT8 expansion eventually would also extend Westports contiguous linear berth to 5.2 kilometers. The expanded and enhanced facilities will also allow Westports to accommodate more effectively the growing requirements of new and larger container shipping alliances in 2017.
