Wheels up for FPSO to come back online in Eastern Mediterranean waters

London-based oil and gas player Energean has received the go-ahead to resume production from a floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel, which is working at a field off the coast of Israel.

Once the U.S. and Israel initiated their attack on Iran, the Strait of Hormuz was closed while multiple energy infrastructure assets suffered damage from missile strikes, which led Rystad Energy to estimate that the bill to repair the reported damage and shutdowns affecting the Gulf energy infrastructure could potentially amount to $25 billion. On the list of assets that underwent precautionary shutdowns were Israel’s Leviathan and Karish gas fields.

Chevron, as the operator of Leviathan with a 29.66% interest, got a clearance notification from Israel’s Petroleum Commissioner at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure to restart operations of the Leviathan platform last week.

As a result, the firm brought the asset back online even before U.S. President Donald J. Trump struck a ceasefire deal with Iran under the condition that the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened.

In the wake of this deal, Energean has received a notice from the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, permitting the safe restart and resumption of production and operations at its FPSO Energean Power.

“Energean is working to safely restart production and resume normal operations in line with its operating procedures,” underlined the company.

The firm begun production from the Karish field in October 2022, after the FPSO Energean Power crossed the Suez Canal and came to Israel in early June 2022.
