China: CIC Changxing Shipyard Completes Repair Works for CMA CGM BLUE WHALE

On March 7th, 2012, after 14 days of tensional repair, MV CMA CGM BLUE WHALE smoothly sailed out of CIC Changxing Shipyard and began her new trip. Belonging to one French container line company, the vessel was a massive container ship with the overall dimension of 347m × 43m × 27m. The main jobs of the vessel were the installation of over 600 stiffeners for shell plate and the renewal of 10 pieces shell plates of the ten side tanks.

Before the plate renewal, about 6000 m3 of 6 heavy oil tanks needed to be cleaned and gas free needed to be done. As one of the global top three container ship carriers, the company has the strictness of a world’s leading shipping company in terms of repair quality and sailing schedule. The repairing schedule was two weeks, which was very hard for such a heavy job.

Before the vessel’s arrival, the leaders of Engineering Dept. had arranged the repair manager to analyze and specified the repair project roundly, and made a primary plan and the overall schedule, and communicated with the ship owners in advance to get their trust. The supervisors had done adequate preparation of the material, equipment and oil tank cleaning application. At the evening of the vessel’s arrival, all the equipment and materials were sent on board. The next morning the oil cleaning job started. Under the joint efforts of everyone concerned, all 6000 m3 cleaning job was finished and passed the gas free inspection with only 72 hours. Meanwhile, steel structure workers had finished preparation and the deck project was started immediately.

Under the lead of the Engineering Dept., all departments reasonably arranged schedule, overcame the bad weather, paid attention to safety and dealt with the production as fast as possible. In only 10 days, all the steel job was completed and ensured the sailing date.
