HHI Hands Over Fuel-Efficient Thalassa Hellas

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has delivered a new fuel-efficient 13,806-TEU containership Thalassa Hellas to Evergreen Marine Corp. The vessel is the first out of ten ordered from HHI in a $1.2 billion deal made in July last year.

The containership, measuring 368 m in length, 51 m in width, and 29.9 m in depth, will use 10% less fuel compared to existing similar class of containerships. The vessel will burn 75 tonnes less than earlier 14,000-TEU vessels saving $1 billion over a 10-year period for Evergreen.

Thalassa Hellas was named last week at HHI in a double christening ceremony together with its sistership the Thalassa Patris, scheduled for delivery at the end of November. The other eight vessels will be delivered between January and September 2014.

Evergreen Marine will charter these megaships to a Greek shipowner Enesel SA.
