Sri Lanka: Repaired Container Carrier Kota Halus Leaves Colombo Dockyard

Container carrier Kota Halus (Dwt 18,872) called in for her first special survey repairs during November 2011. The repairs were completed within 7 days, one day ahead of the quoted period. Colombo was the best option for the owners/ managers given the strategic location placing the vessel on the trading route, the vessel discharged her containers in Colombo and shifted directly into drydocks for her repairs.

During this drydocking call the work package covered repairs in all sectors; blasting painting, steel renewals, piping repairs, hatch cover resting pads and other routine drydocking related repairs.

The owner’s interests were looked after by Mr. Mohamed Hoque – Fleet Manager. The yard team was headed by Ship Manager Ajith Kariyapperuma – who was well supported by all production departments to re-deliver the vessel ahead of schedule.

The container carrier was accommodated in the 125,000 DWT drydock for her repair requirements and sailed out direct from the drydocks. The repairs were carried out meeting the Class NKK classification society requirements. Eastern Maritime Ltd.(Colombo) Ltd., handled the local husbanding work smoothly.

Emergence of Colombo as hub for container traffic, places Colombo Dockyard as a serious candidate for many container carriers touching Colombo, for her repair requirements. (Drydocking / afloat). Over the past two decades many Far East, European owners have over looked Colombo due to the war risk situation that prevailed in the Island. The maritime industry in Sri Lanka has seen rejuvenated activity with the dawn of Peace, lifting of all war risk restrictions, many international ship owners/ lines are looking at Colombo/ Sri Lanka as a serious destination for their drydocking repairs and marine requirements.
