Samsung Heavy Industries Targets USD 7.8 Bn Orderbook

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has set sights on achieving USD 7.8 billion worth orderbook in 2019.

The figure aims to exceed the recorded orderbook value from 2018, which came at USD 6.3 billion.

Samsung ended last year on a high note having received orders for 7 LNG carriers in December alone, including two from Cardiff Gas, two from Gaslog and three from separate unnamed owners. In total, the shipbuilder secured contracts for 18 LNG carriers, 13 containerships, 15 tankers, and 3 special purpose ships last year.

Recovery of global shipbuilding industry spurred by ordering of environmentally-friendly vessels before 2020 sulphur cap’s entrance into force has aided South Korean shipbuilders in overcoming the economic woes that plagued the industry over the past couple of years.

Riding on the industry’s recovery, the South Korean Big Three builders are eyeing larger orderbooks this year.

Namely, Hyundai Heavy Industries Group has increased its appetite for 2019 setting its orderbook target at USD 15.9 billion, up by 20.7 percent year-on-year.

Hyundai Heavy Industries has set sights on attaining USD 8 billion in shipbuilding segment, whereas Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard have vowed to secure USD 4.3 billion and USD 3.5 billion worth of orders each, Yonhap reported earlier.
