Heerema exec takes on CEO role in Bumi Armada

Bumi Armada, a global FPSO player, has announced the appointment of Leon A. Harland as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Bumi Armada’s previous CEO, Hassan Basma, resigned in December 2014. Harland will take office on May 16, 2016, and will be appointed as an Executive Director.

Presently Harland is the Executive Vice-President, Commercial & Technology of Heerema Marine Contractors and a member of the Board of Management, with joint responsibility for the company’s performance, and direct responsibility for all commercial, contracting, engineering and innovation initiatives.

Earlier in March, Harland informed Heerema Marine Contractors he would be leaving his position effective May 1, 2016.

According to Bumi Armada, prior to joining Heerema, he worked at SBM Offshore, also an FPSO operator, where he held various positions in engineering, project management and business development. In 2004, Harland was tasked to start up and build their Floating-LNG business.

Harland holds a Master of Science Degree – Civil (Offshore) Engineering from Delft University of Technology. He was also involved in fixed platform reliability research at Delft University of Technology and subsequently at Shell Research.

“The Board would like to thank Chan Chee Beng for stepping into the role of Acting CEO since January 2015 and for his steady hand in running the Company during a very challenging period in the industry,” Bumi Armada said on Wednesday.

With the appointment of Harland, Chan Chee Beng will revert to his former positon as a Non-Independent Non-Executive Director on the Board.
