OEEC: Turning technology into a service

An offshore drilling rig can be a dangerous place to operate. Heavy equipment is moving around, but people are still required to perform specific jobs in the same area, so-called red zones.

Rolloos is introducing a Red Zone Monitoring solution, to inform crews about the human activity in specific dynamic red zones. Joost Lasschuit focused on the business strategy of the Offshore Red Zone Monitoring System with the young professionals during the second Master Class at Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference 2018 on Wednesday 24 October.

Minimize risk and increase awareness

The industry-wide goal to minimize risk and increase situational awareness of crews challenges system integrators like Rolloos to come up with both technologically and operationally sound solutions that contribute to the safety of the workers on the rig. Joost Lasschuit is Managing Director at Rolloos. Rolloos is a system integrator that provides innovative CCTV and analytics solutions for hazardous environments.

“Every drilling contractor faces the same problem:  with multiple people working in a small (hazardous) space surrounded by heavy equipment, drilling operations can be tough”, said Lasschuit during the Master Class. They introduced an advanced analytics-driven platform to inform crews about the human activity in specific dynamic red zones: Red Zone Monitoring solution. “With the Red Zone Monitoring platform, we need to also offer the required consultancy and support models to provide the platform as a service.”

Challenging young professionals

Lasschuit challenged the young professionals to come up with ideas about what business strategy they should use for this solution. They had to take into account key elements like a pricing model, competition, functionality system and market segments.  The different groups with young professionals present their ideas after 45 minutes of brainstorming. “I really liked your toughs and the ideas you came up with”, he told the group.

Just go for it

He ended his Master Class with a message to the young professionals. “I’d like to motivate you to go beyond improving yourself. There are so many possibilities. So if you have a great idea, just go for it. Try to travel to mars!”
