ABS and AMOG pooling resources for offshore mooring digital twin

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with AMOG Consulting to collaborate on advancing offshore mooring digital twin technology.

The MoU is said to target critical risk areas of mooring and riser components and cable integrity issues, as these are costly and time consuming to fix, resulting in asset downtime; thus, a coordinated technology and class approach could help reduce failure risk and operation and maintenance costs.

Miguel Hernandez, ABS’ Senior Vice President of Global Offshore, highlighted: “Operators want digital twin systems that feed directly into class and regulatory processes. This collaboration links a monitoring platform to ABS classification and certification support. We are proud to be able to utilize our deep technology insight and extensive marine experience to support this important safety advance.”

ABS claims that data-driven lifecycle management, combining continuous monitoring with class-recognized processes, can enable condition-based inspection, extend asset life, and improve operation uptime.

Ben Clark, AMOG’s CEO, said: “AMOG’s smart marine integrity checking solution has been successfully deployed by multiple operators, delivering robust integrity monitoring whilst reducing reliance on complex and sometimes inaccessible instruments. We are excited to collaborate with ABS to expand this proven technology and to provide insights to more operators worldwide.”

This agreement is perceived to combine AMOG’s monitoring technology with ABS’ classification and certification capabilities to deliver a highly detailed integrity-monitoring solution for floating offshore assets.

As a result, the system will provide a digital model of moorings, risers, and subsea cables for any site-specific floaters, which is expected to result in a unified, integrated solution for integrity management, regulatory compliance, and lifecycle performance.

Clark added: “Our focus is on next-generation lifecycle integrity and risk reduction – enabling safer, more efficient offshore operations.

“By collaborating with ABS, we are exploring how the AMOG solution could benefit ABS clients from a Class perspective, where robust data is combined with insight to support decision-making for critical integrity management planning and response tasks.”

This partnership comes weeks after ABS granted an approval in principle (AiP) to MISC and China Offshore Engineering & Technology Company for a concept of an ammonia floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit.
