Anadarko’s board member dies of leukemia

Anadarko Petroleum Corporation said the member of its board of directors, Richard George, who joined the Anadarko board in 2012, passed away on Aug. 1 as a result of complications from acute myeloid leukemia at the age of 67.

“We are deeply saddened by the news of Rick’s passing, and owe Rick a great debt of gratitude for the leadership he provided not just on our board of directors, but for the entire energy industry,” said Al Walker, Anadarko chairman, president and CEO, extending his condolences to the family.

George served as CEO of Suncor Energy for two decades, helping pioneer Canada’s oil-sands industry. He was named Canadian Energy Person of the Year in 2011 by the Energy Council of Canada and was inducted into the Canadian Petroleum Hall of Fame in 2008.

George was also named a member of the Order of Canada in 2007 for his leadership in the development of Canada’s natural resources sector, for his efforts to provide economic opportunities to Aboriginal communities, and for his commitment to sustainable development.
