APM Terminals Pecém Sees Record Box Volumes

APM Terminals Pecém, a container operator at the Port of Pecém, has achieved a new container volume record as it handled 213,951 TEUs or 130,008 moves in 2017.

This was a 19% annual increase in box handling volumes.

As explained by Daniel Rose, Managing Director of APM Terminals Pecém, the terminal uses two new ship-to-shore (STS) cranes capable of 70 berth moves per hour (BMPH).

“Our terminal productivity has doubled since the arrival of the STS cranes in 2016, averaging 33,6 moves per hour per crane. These numbers also attracted transshipment volumes – which tripled in 2017 compared to 2016,” Rose said.

Pecém is the closest Brazilian port to the United States and Europe markets. In the second part of 2017, the container terminal added new lines from Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and Maersk Line focused on fruit exports to Europe.

Along with APM Terminals Pecém, APM Terminals’ Brazil operations include APM Terminals Itajaí and Brasil Terminal Portuário, at the Port of Santos.
