Azerbaijan: SOCAR Head Office Hosts Presentation on Shafag-Asiman 3D Seismic Survey

On May 13, a presentation on carrying out 3D-seismic survey on the prospective structure “Shafag-Asiman” was hosted at SOCAR Head Office. Opening the ceremony, SOCAR first vice-president Mr. Khoshbakht Yusifzadeh gave detailed information on the prospective structure “Shafag-Asiman”.

According to him, on May 6, a contract for exploration, development and production sharing of the prospective structure “Shafag-Asiman” signed between SOCAR and BP was ratified by the Parliament of Azerbaijan. “Shafag-Asiman” block is located 125 kilometers to the south-east of Baku and covers an area of some 1100 square kilometers. It is located in the depth of 650-800 m.

2D-seismic survey on this structure was carried out by Azerbaijani geophysicists in 1961 and revealed the presence of hydrocarbon deposits. On May of the current year, BP-Azerbaijan and Caspian Geophysical JV signed a contract to carry out 3D-seismic studies. Under the contract, Gilavar ship is expected to arrive in the structure. It was mentioned at the meeting that the ship is expected to implement 3D- seismic on the “Babak” and “Umid” perspective structures. The seismic works will give more information on availability of the South Caspian basin, as well as its geological structure.

BP Azerbaijan vice-president for exploration and evaluation Mr. Greg Riley said that the seismic survey will continue until the end of 2011. It will enable to estimate more accurately the structures and prepare a program of wild-cat drilling. General Director of the Caspian Geophysical JV Mr. Tracy Campbell gave detailed information on Gilavar ship. According to him, the ship has successfully implemented the orders of “Shell”, “BP”, “Maersk”, “Petrobras” Companies. At present, the ship is in Norway for receiving proper licences. The ship is expected to arrive in Azerbaijan in June of the current year.
