BAE Systems’ Barrow Shipyard Wins Best in Trade Awards, UK

Barrow shipyard has scooped three Best in Trade awards in BAE Systems UK Apprenticeship Awards.

Pipe fabricator Alex Holmes won the Craft Mechanical Achievement award, Sarah Linton won the Overall Craft Electrical award, and Joanna Edmondson won the Best Higher Apprentice award. Apprentice Co-ordinator, John Harris MBE, was also awarded a BAE Systems UK Recognition award for his dedication to supporting, training and mentoring steel work apprentices.

This year’s Awards event, which was held at Manchester’s Renaissance Hotel, recognised excellence in the workplace and academic study. An Award was also given for work in the community.

BAE Systems is one of the largest employers of apprentices in the UK with around 1,000 in training at any one time.

Presenting the Awards, Nigel Whitehead, Group Managing Director at BAE Systems, said: “The Company is hugely proud of its apprentices, who are critical in ensuring we maintain a pipeline of first-class engineering and business talent. I congratulate all of our nominees and award-winners and look forward to hearing more from them as their careers develop.”

Through its Skills 2020 programme, BAE Systems invests more than £80M per annum in the UK in education and schools activity, university partnerships and training and development for employees, including apprentices and graduates. Skills 2020 represents BAE Systems’ commitment to ensuring it has the right skills to remain competitive and operate successfully in the UK over the next decade, into 2020 and beyond.
