Barton Willmore Submitts Planning Application for LNG Plant in Anglesey

Leading planning and design consultancy Barton Willmore has submitted a planning application for a new Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) plant in Anglesey.

The application to Isle of Anglesey County Council on behalf of Amlwch LNG (formerly Canatxx LNG) is to renew a planning consent that was granted in 2008 but never implemented. This construction process is expected to take two to three years and will provide approximately 300 new jobs as well as 60 new jobs at the gas plant when the site comes into use. A decision on the application is due by the end of June this year.

The 19 hectare site near Amlwch on the north coast of Anglesey has a history of industrial use, having previously been used by Shell to import oil and for the production of bromine from sea water, which ceased in 2003. Some of the buildings from the bromine production plant will be retained for use in the LNG facility.

Adrian James, Partner, leading Barton Willmore’s specialist energy team in Cambridge said: “This is an important development in the future of the UK’s gas supply which the County Council has recognised there is a need for. It will also regenerate a site that has been vacant for over 10 years providing many construction jobs as well as many permanent once the development has been completed.”

Under the proposals tankers will import liquid gas to a mooring 3km from the Amlwch coast. The LNG will then be transferred by undersea pipeline from the mooring platform to the site where it is converted back to natural gas and sent into the UK gas network.

As well as the reuse of several existing buildings on the site, the proposals also include measures to protect and enhance the natural habitats of local wildlife as well as landscaping improvements.
