BC Ferries Inks Five-Year Service Deal with Point Hope Maritime

British Columbia-based ferry owner and operator BC Ferries has inked a five-year supply agreement with compatriot shipyard Point Hope Maritime for eight of the company’s smaller vessels.

The agreement includes scheduled dry-docking, maintenance, repair or refit requirements, as well as emergency dry-docking services.

The vessels that will be serviced at Point Hope Maritime are Kahloke, Klitsa, Kuper, Kwuna, Nicola, Nimpkish, Tachek and Quadra Queen II.

As disclosed, the contract is said to be in line with BC Ferries’ goal to continue investing in B.C.-based marine services. The company is planning approximately 20 scheduled dry-dockings for the minor vessels over the next five years.

Although BC Ferries operates its own vessel refit facility, the company does not have its dry-docking facility and sources these services from the external ship repair market in British Columbia.

In a separate announcement, BC Ferries informed that the company’s fleet maintenance unit received its first Green Marine certification during the environmental program’s 10th annual conference.

“BC Ferries’ vessels and terminals have been Green Marine certified since 2015, when the company first joined the program but the shipyard certification is a new achievement, showing a commitment to continue to benchmark environmental performance and make continuous improvements,” the company said.

Green Marine is a globally recognized, voluntary, industry sustainability initiative for ship operators, ports, terminals and shipyards. It addresses key environmental issues through eleven performance indicators such as greenhouse gases, air emissions, spill prevention, waste management, environmental leadership, and community impacts – some applicable to shipping activities, other to landside operations.
