BMS, Kotug to deploy LNG hybrid barge in Port of Rotterdam

Hamburg-based Becker Marine Systems and Dutch towage operator Kotug signed a memorandum of understanding to launch the LNG hybrid barge in the Port of Rotterdam with effect from June 2017.

The LNG barge, a floating energy plant, is designed to provide power to moored cruise ships in the port, Becker Marine said in a statement.

It is an alternative for producing electricity in the traditional way by either their generator sets or their main engines. During the winter season, the LNG barge will be able to deliver heat to factories or to the central city heating system in addition to electricity.

Primarily the LNG barge will support cruise ships moored in Rotterdam while Kotug will move the barge and provide commercial, technical and operational management, the statement added.
