Braemar’s FSP LNG containment system gets BV approval

Braemar Technical Services said that the Bureau Veritas classification society issued a general design approval for the FSP Type B LNG containment system.

Braemar noted that the development of the new containment system technology included cooperation with joint venture partners Honghua Offshore, EnTX Group, and Jamestown Metal Marine Services.

BV issued the approval following cryogenic testing of a prototype built by Shanghai Aerospace and outfitted at Honghua’s facility in Shanghai.

Starting with the General Dynamics NASSCO-patented tank design, for which the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Lloyd’s Register had issued an approval in principle (AIP) several years prior, Braemar engineered a new containment system that meets the demands of LNG storage in marine, offshore and onshore applications, the company said.

The FSP containment system brings a number of advantages such as reduced cost of construction compared to equivalent technologies, with Braemar saying the technology has been incorporated into the design of the LNG 21 export project.

The project is being developed in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico with Braemar being picked as the owner’s engineer. In cooperation with Wood Group, Braemar is currently carrying out the FEED for the project which includes an FSP system with a total storage volume of 300,000 cubic meters.
