Fire Erupts aboard Maersk Boxship

A fire broke out on board the Dutch-flagged containership Maersk Pembroke on August 22 while underway some 125 nautical miles South West of Ireland.

The fire was reported at 01:30 CET in the 2,902 TEU vessel’s engine room, a Maersk Line spokesperson confirmed to World Maritime News.

“The fire originated from an auxiliary engine and is reported under control. UK Coast Guard has been contacted,” a company statement said.

“All 22 crew members on board are safe and accounted for. No effect on the environment has been reported.”

Maersk Line said it was working on a contingency plan to make the 1998-built Sub Panamax containership operational again simultaneously with an emergency tow plan.

“We are in contact with our customers to find the best solution for the handling of their cargo,” the spokesperson added.

As informed, the vessel was en route to Montreal, Canada when the fire erupted.
