Bulker Grounds on Shoal off New Brunswick

The 81,262 dwt bulk carrier SBI Carioca ran aground off the coast of New Brunswick in the morning hours of October 11, the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) of Canada informed.

The vessel hit a shoal near Belledune while it was on its way to the port, loaded with 65,000 metric tonnes of petroleum coke, according to CBC News.

Preliminary information reportedly showed that there was no breach in SBI Carioca’s hull. There were no reports of water pollution and injuries to the 23 crew members on board the ship, the media cited TSB’s regional manager of operations for the Atlantic region, Pierre Murray.

A team of investigators were sent to the site to gather information and assess the occurrence.

World Maritime News contacted TSB for an update on the incident, however, they are yet to reply.

The 2015-built SBI Carioca was sailing from the US port of Norfolk to Belledune when it ran into trouble, AIS data provided by Marine Traffic shows.
